The Sani Pass! The Drakensberg Mountain Range was declared a World Heritage Site in the year 2000. The
unbroken mountain range ensures that there are few access routes to the mountain kingdom of
Lesotho from the east – you’ll enter this amazing kingdom by way of the only route that is open to
motor vehicles (4 x 4’s only) – the Sani Pass.
Your guided tour begins when you leave Halls Country House and travel through the beautiful Midlands of KwaZulu Natal to the historic village of Nottingham Road, along the Drakensberg escarpment, via the Nzinga, Nhlathimbe, Mkomasi and Mkomazana River valleys to Himeville. Now the real adventure begins - the 25 kilometre climb into Lesotho along the Sani Pass.

As the Landrover picks its way along what used to be the old mule track, the vastness of the
Natal Midlands spreads out behind you. Stopping at regular intervals to enjoy the views and hear
about the fascinating history of this ancient trade route, you eventually reach the Lesotho border
post, 9 300 ft above sea level.
Continuing along a surprisingly flat plain, the guided tour takes
you to the top of the Black Mountain (10 400 ft). A short walk from here is Thaba Ntlenyane, the
highest point in South Africa.
Close to the summit you can tuck in to a mouth-watering picnic lunch and a chilled glass of white
wine. A short stop at the “Highest Pub in Africa” – is followed by the drive
down into KwaZulu Natal and back to Halls for dinner and an evening of reflections.
