History of Halls Country House

The original homestead was built in 1904 for the Founder and Headmaster of a small private school called Weenen County College. It was originally conceived as a "Natal Verandah" house with verandahs on all four sides. Over the years however, most of the verandahs have been used to extend the living space. Sometimes in rather odd ways. But it has the patina of age and now it’s "farmhouse quirky".

Weenen County College’s Headmaster’s name was E.A. Thompson. He was an Oxford Don and the school operated between 1906 and 1917 when it went into liquidation. Notwithstanding the fact that he was owed considerable sums of money at the time, he felt that pursuing his debtors would have been contrary to the kind of ethos he’d been trying to inculcate in his students.

Weenen County College must have had quite an esprit de corps. Although never catering for more than 125 boys, if you go into the great halls of Hilton and Michaelhouse, you’ll find that Weenen County College regularly thumped them at cricket and rugby.

School Chapel

Nothing remains today of the old school buildings. But the original school chapel is still in use. It’s 4 kilometres further on towards Giant’s Castle. It was also built circa 1904. It’s a beautiful little chapel, built out of stone with lovely stained glass windows. With its deep rural setting, it’s a very popular wedding venue. E.A. Thompson and his family are buried in the chapel graveyard. It's a lovely spot, deep in the country, with vistas of the Central Drakensberg foothills.
