A Special Event in the Drakensberg

The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir
"Music in the Mountains"
27 – 30 April 2006

Don’t miss this. The Drakensberg “Music in the Mountains” Festival at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School. Four days of this famous Choir supported by guest artists in a world-class 600-seater auditorium. Outside you’ll find everything you would expect to find at a country market – food stalls, country pantries and a whole range of crafters selling their wares.

So what’s the programme? First up the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir have been working with the South African Police Orchestra and between them have developed a programme of light and light-classical music (2 x 3 hour sessions, one on the Friday and one on the Saturday). R40 – R60 per person. Champagne air, azure skies and the pure tones of counter-tenor harmony?

The second programme celebrates the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Again, 2 x 3 hour sessions, one on the Friday and one on the Saturday. They’re importing Deon van der Walt, a Drakensberg Boys’ Choir old boy who has become recognized as one of the best Mozart tenors in the world. R70 – R90 per person.

Last? How about “Mad About Movies”. A 3-hour session on the Saturday and the Sunday night. R80 – R100 per person.

All three programmes are “one-offs”. You’re not going to see or hear them anywhere other than at the Drakensberg “Music in the Mountains” Festival.

Guest artists? Patricia Lewis for a bit of razz-ma-tazz. Jannie Moolman (tenor) and wife Anneke de Villiers (violinist). Rocco de Villiers (pianist) and Namibian-born singer Juanita du Plessis.

But the stars of the show will be the fabulous Drakensberg Boys’ Choir!

If you want to do all 4 days of it, you’d be better off staying in the Champagne Valley because the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School is about an hour away from us (we’re in the next valley down – the Bushmans River valley). But if you were thinking of spending the long weekend with us and doing a bit of walking in the Drakensberg or a bit of shopping on the Midlands Meander, factor this magical event into your thinking.

It really will be a Drakensberg Special. Home
