The northern end of the World Heritage site – the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park - in the Champagne Valley. It’s name says it all. Understandably, there’s been a lot of development here but there are two things that qualify as essential “ticks”.
Champagne Sports Resort
If you’re any kind of a golfer, playing the Champagne Sports Resort course is a “tick” you must get.
So if the ladies have left enough space in the car, do put your clubs in.
It’s tough if you play off the championship tees – the gold ones - (you need about 200 metres off the tee if you’re going to clear the rough) but they have catered for the rest of us!
So how about 9 holes in the morning – even the most unenthusiastic wife / girlfriend can put up with that. It’s a fabulous walk. From here (Halls Country House) it’ll take you about 45 minutes to get there.
Drakensberg Boys' Choir
And to round off the day, if you happen to be here on a Wednesday afternoon during the school term, a Drakensberg Boys' Choir concert is simply a sublime experience.
It’s just as gob-smacking as anything you’ve ever seen on the West End at a tenth of the price. Bring tissues and a jersey for the goosebumps. (It’s practically just across the road from the Champagne Sports Resort).
Now how’s that for a nice day trip? A "taster" on one of the most famous golf courses in the country followed by a live show that's gonna blow your socks off!
What are we going to eat? Well, we'll give you a picnic, or you can have a little something at the 19th Hole. Or we'll tell you the best places to get tea and scones.
