The Midlands Meander has now grown into an eclectic mix of artists, crafters, restaurants and hospitality establishments. It also offers a diverse range of sporting, adventure, environmental and historical pursuits. It is now by far the largest arts and crafts ramble in the country with more than 160 registered members scattered along the 60-kilometre route between Pietermaritzburg and Mooi River.
Midlands Meander - Coutryside & Climate
The region is criss-crossed by tiny crystal streams in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains. There are green indigenous forests and patchworks of fields. Cool morning mists melt away to reveal a shimmering midday sun and in the evenings electric storms crackle across the mountains and bluster away into soft summer showers that rejuvenate thick, green pastures. In the autumn, gold and burgundy leaves settle into thick drifts and the icy chill of a real winter experience often blankets the fields, valleys and mountains in snow.
Food on the Midlands Meander
Try the simple, picnic style delights of the farm stalls and country pantries. Freshly picked fruit, salad greens and vegetables, honey, homemade breads and sweets, pickles and preserves. Visit the farms where different cheeses are made from goats or cows milk or sample succulent sausages made from traditional recipes. Delight in the real flavours of freshly caught trout, free-range eggs and unpasteurised milk. Fast food doesn’t exist, so take your time.
