Welcome. Doing the Drakensberg? Perhaps the Midlands Meander? Accommodation on your mind?
How about a historic 100 year old farmhouse. Deep rural setting. No big resort hotels here - you'll probably have the mountains to yourselves. But ideally situated for your day trips into the central, southern and northern Drakensberg. Get all the guide book "ticks" here. Access? On a quiet tarred road.
"A very pleasant Drakensberg accommodation establishment which deserves to be better
known. It has an ideal position far from the madding crowd, both for
the Midlands Meander and the Drakensberg mountains. Highly recommended
for overseas visitors.
Mike Zimmerman, Durban, South Africa.
The philosophy is farmhouse and homemade. Ouma se kombuis. Homemade biscuits, jams, preserves, toiletries, breads, muffins and chocolates. And farm-style candlelit dinners.
Festive bar, big log fires. And then - Grandma’s feather bed. Your alarm clock? Birdsong. Boere kuiergenot op sy beste. 4 star graded.
And Midlands Meander Magic on your doorstep.
Bring Jerseys. You Never Know...
We are outside Mooi River at the northern end of the Midlands Meander. You can get all the guide book "ticks" from the Amphitheatre (the northern Drakensberg) to the Sani Pass (the southern Drakensberg) through Giant's Castle (the central Drakensberg). And obviously there's a lot in between!
Spectacular views, seclusion, tranquillity and nothing more intrusive than the sound of a tractor in the distance or an owl hooting at night.
Guest accommodation is accessed directly from the garden via private entrances. You can expect clean and cosy rooms, comfortable beds and mattresses and crisply laundered linen and curtains. We only accommodate 10 people so every guest will enjoy our warmest, personal attention. You can see pictures and desriptions of all our rooms if you follow this LINK.
Food matters here. We're not big on fancy presentation and small helpings. But we are big on taste and flavour.
If you like a big breakfast, tuck into pancakes, hash browns, farm-cured bacon, free-range eggs to order. If not, go for the diversity of fresh fruit, locally produced yoghurt, homemade breads, buns and pastries. Don't forget to sample the variety of jams and preserves we either make (most of the time) or get from various country pantries.
In the evening, enjoy a candlelit dinner in front of a log fire in our restaurant. Country cooking is the theme, but the secret is the freshest, organic ingredients that are either homegrown or sourced from adjacent farms.
"We had a great holiday. You are great hosts and, Janette, you
really know how to cook. You can be sure that you haven't seen the last
of us!"
Andrew Sharp, Hamburg, Germany.
A glass of something...
What to do? The Midlands Meander (have a look at the Top Twenty page), with 180+ members is the biggest arts & crafts route in the country - by a long way. And a lot of these places are hidden gems.
The Drakensberg of course (you'll find plenty of information on the page Drakensberg or by clicking on the pictures in the right hand column). Giant's Castle is the centrepiece of the Drakensberg World Heritage Site and boasts impressive outdoor rock art galleries. Giant's Castle is also home to some of the biggest populations of lammergeier and eland worldwide. And walking is good for you!
Then there are Anglo Boer War Battlefields Tours because a great deal of the fighting went on in the surrounding areas. It's a great day out in remote and beautifully scenic parts of the country with an aimiable guide and a great picnic. And you learn something!
Alternatively, go fly fishing, horse riding, or play a round of golf. Or perhaps you'd like a trip up Sani Pass?
And if you're looking for something really sublime - take in a Drakensberg Boys' Choir concert.
"A really relaxed happy stay. Janette and Brian went the extra
mile to make us feel at home and enjoy our stay. A wonderful getaway
run by such caring people who made us feel so much at home. We will
recommend this country house to all our friends."
Pat and Louis Mazoue, Durban, South
Africa.

We've made our first amateur video. It's not great but I think it'll give you a good feel for what it's like here in the Drakensberg foothills. (If you've got a slow connection it might "stop & start" a bit).
