Drakensberg Accommodation
Midlands Meander
Accommodation

Welcome. Looking for Drakensberg accommodation? Central? How about a historic 100 year old farmhouse. Deep rural setting. No big resort hotels here - you'll probably have the mountains to yourselves. But ideally situated for your day trips into the central, southern and northern Drakensberg. Access? On a quiet tarred road.

What Our Guests Say "Very nice setting, rooms spotless."
Pieter Herbst
, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The philosophy is..farmhouse..and..homemade. Ouma se kombuis. Homemade biscuits, jams, preserves, toiletries, breads, muffins and chocolates. And farm-style candlelit dinners...

Festive bar, big log fires. And then - Grandma’s feather bed. Your alarm clock? Birdsong. Boere kuiergenot op sy beste. 4 star graded. We got close last year so we're trying for 5 this year.

And Midlands Meander Magic on your doorstep.

Drakensberg accommodation
…deep rural setting…

Doing the Midlands Meander and looking for accommodation? Accommodation in the Central Drakensberg foothills? Spectacular views, seclusion, tranquillity and nothing more intrusive than the sound of a tractor in the distance or an owl hooting at night?

Drakensberg accommodation
…architecture with character…

The main house, originally conceived as a "Natal Verandah House" was built in 1904. (More on the history?). Over the years, most of the verandahs have been used to extend the living space. Sometimes in rather odd ways. Now it's "farmhouse quirky".

It's set in a lush, colour-swathed, fragrant garden shaded by old trees. A great place to enjoy your morning coffee or a sundowner. Bird life is prolific with 380 species identified.

…perfect privacy…

Guest accommodation is accessed directly from the garden via private entrances. We only accommodate 10 people so every guest will enjoy our warmest, personal attention. You can see pictures and desriptions of all our rooms as well as our first amatuer video (not great, but it'll give you a good feel for what it's like here) if you follow this link:

…great food…

For breakfast choose between American, English or Continental – or have it all. If you like a big breakfast, tuck into pancakes, hash browns, farm-cured bacon, free-range eggs to order. If not, go for the rich diversity of fresh fruit, locally produced yoghurt, homemade breads, buns and pastries. Don't forget to sample the variety of jams and preserves we either make or get from various country pantries.

In the evening, linger over a candlelit dinner in front of a log fire in our restaurant, where fine wines accompany equally fine food. Country cooking is the theme, but the secret is the freshest, organic ingredients that are either homegrown or sourced from adjacent farms.

What Our Guests Say "Real farmhouse food. Loved it!"
Colin and Julie Ward
, Somerset, UK.

…what to do…

Halls is ideally positioned outside Mooi River, on the Giant's Castle road and is your Midlands Meander / Drakensberg accommodation option that gives you easy access to both the central, northern and southern Drakensberg and the Midlands Meander. Giants Castle is only 45 minutes away on a tarred but small rural road that switchbacks steeply into the Central Drakensberg.

Swim in natural pools fed by crystal-clear streams. Giant's Castle – the centrepiece of the Drakensberg World Heritage Site boasts impressive outdoor galleries of stone age rock art. Giant's Castle is also home to some of the biggest populations of lammergeier and eland worldwide.

What Our Guests Say " The management and staff couldn't do enough for you." Terry and Pat Metcalf, Hampshire, UK.

Halls is also close to some of the gems on the Midlands Meander like Sharrow Weaving; the Linen Loft; the Wine Cellar; Hartford House; Treverton Schools and Weston Agricultural College.

A guided tour of the Drakensberg battlefields will bring to vivid life the Anglo Boer War engagements at Spioenkop and Colenso. Or play a round of golf on some of the most picturesque courses in the country.

Alternatively, go fly fishing for trout, bass or yellows in any one of the professionally managed 28 dams and 2 rivers to which Halls Country House arranges access for their guests. Or perhaps you'd like a trip up Sani Pass? And if you're looking for something really sublime - take in a Drakensberg Boys' Choir concert.

What Our Guests Say " A very pleasant establishment which deserves to be better known. It has an ideal position far from the madding crowd, both for the Midlands Meander and the Drakensberg mountains. Highly recommended for overseas visitors."
Mike Zimmerman
, Durban, South Africa.

How about a pamper session at a day-spa? Or a horse ride into the Drakensberg foothills at the Hlatikulu Crane and Wetland Sanctuary? (They rescue abused horses and it takes them years to bring them back from the abyss). And for a real adrenalin jump try a Karkloof Canopy Tour.
